Seeing Double: Chef Kerry Wins Dublin Rotary Top Chef Competition... Again!?

This time benefiting Hope Hospice of Pleasanton, Chef Kerry and PIC (partners in competition) Bent Creek Winery took the taco for Best Food and Wine Pairing at the 6th annual Dublin Rotary Top Chef Event. The new larger venue at the Mercedes Benz Dealership offered no obstacle as Kent Creek Cheffery (a new Bennifer type monicker I just came up with) rode their combination of 5 Spice Sweet Potato Chip/Creamed Spinach/Gyro Lamb/Pickled Zucchini appetizer and a fruity "Red on Red" Cabarnet/Syrah blend to victory that fateful Sunday night in late April.

Chef Kerry and Crew Take 1st Place In Local Chili Cookoff

January 25, 2014

Dark Horse (n) - A common phrase in the lexicon of American vernacular, wherein an "underdog" or unlikely hero enters the field of competition at great odds... but with iron mettle and a sack full of oats, achieves well beyond a given level of expectation.

This was the scene one brisk California evening. We were just three strangers who had never entered such a contest. With our spurs a jangling and pots a simmering, chefs Jenny Vasquez, Liz Gregor, and yours truly whipped up a stew worthy of 1st place in the 15th annual Kiwanis of Alameda Chili Cookoff.  Gregor, the team's decoration technician, constructed a booth that showcased both the technical prowess and legumatic whimsy that our group, The Beany Beauties truly possessed.

Topping off the contents of the mythical cauldron were two choice garnishes: allspice pickled red onions and cilantro lime sour cream. The chili itself contained a harmonic blend of negro, New Mexico, casabel, and chipotle chilies, as well as chocolate stout beer, cinnamon, black beans, tomatoes, Ibarra chocolate, and a trio of hearty meats (7 bone chuck roast, pork shoulder, and premium ground beef).

Kudos also go out to the other groups of chili makers who did themselves proud such as High Street Station, Alameda Firefighters, H&R Block, Eon Technologies, and the 1400 Club. After the hard fought battle we were treated to a fab BBQ dinner and a country line dancing exhibition... as winners of the night's raffle, silent auction, and chili cookoff were revealed.

If you haven't figured it out by now... it was us!!

Chef Kerry Becomes Bi-Coastal Cooking Competition Winner

May 17, 2013

Intercourse, PA- After 4 years of attempting to impress the fussypot culinarians of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Chef Kerry at long last managed to take home 1st Place in Kitchen Kettle Village's Rhubarb Dessert Contest.

Chef Kerry's winning entry: Rhubarb Cheesecake with Rhubarb Compote and Rhubarb Jelly Candies. If you're counting, that's rhubarbX3, which was good for a shiny blue ribbon and a gift certificate to KKV's canning kitchen gift shop and meat smokehaus. Can he pick up anything for anyone while he's out there? How about a nice Pennsylvania road apple? (warning: may be made entirely out of horse leavings)

Next time you're in Central Pennsylvania, we recommend a visit to Kitchen Kettle Village. While there, you can fill up on countless samples, feed and pet animals in their mini zoo, shake the hand of Yummie the Gingerbread Man, and take a horse and buggy ride. http://www.kitchenkettle.com/index.asp

Chef Kerry Makes Sandwich, Helps Pets, Wins Statue

April 28, 2013

Dublin, CA- On a warm, spring evening in the heart of the East Bay, the Dublin Rotary Club held their 5th annual Top Chef Grand Tasting Event at the Shannon Community Center. This charity gala benefited the East Bay Humane Society, with the proceeds going to programs that train therapy dogs to seniors and others in need. Over 200 guests turned out to taste wares provided by 12 different Bay Area restaurants. Each restaurant was teamed with a Livermore Valley winery, and together each team provided a food and wine pairing.

Despite such high caliber competition such as Armadillo Willie's, Elephant Bar, and Eddie Papa's, Chef Kerry took home the prize by serving a Pulled Pork and Havarti Panini with Chayote and Apple Vinegar Slaw. The sandwich was matched with a 2009 Red Zinfandel from Bent Creek Winery. Bent Creek won an award for Best Wine. It was a clean sweep for our booth!
